Peter Obi has confirmed his intention to run for president in 2027, dismissing speculation that he would be Atiku Abubakar’s running mate. In a TV interview, Obi stated, “I’m going to contest for the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it.” He emphasized that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party, despite his involvement in the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi clarified that his participation in the coalition isn’t an act of disloyalty to the Labour Party, saying, “This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C.” He defended his decision to join the coalition, citing the need for collective strength and diverse experience. “I need people who have failed and succeeded before. You don’t lead a complex country like Nigeria alone,” he added.
The Labour Party has expressed focus on the 2027 election with Peter Obi as its presidential candidate.
