UYO – The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a social media user for allegedly spreading false security information capable of causing panic among residents of the state.

The Command disclosed that, the suspect, Akaninyene Udo, a resident of Akpautong in Esit Eket Local Government Area, was apprehended following investigations into a viral social media post that allegedly threatened residents of Eket and its environs.

According to the Police, the suspect, who operates on social media under the name “AK Philo,” shared a post stating, “Eket get ready for us,” accompanied by an image of an armed bandit. The post reportedly triggered widespread fear and concern among residents.

In a statement issued by the Command, police authorities expressed concern over the activities of individuals who use social media platforms to circulate false, misleading and provocative security-related messages designed to create fear, panic and unnecessary apprehension among members of the public.

The Police, however, reassured residents that the security situation across Akwa Ibom State remains peaceful, stable and under control, stressing that law enforcement agencies have continued to maintain vigilance and deploy proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.

The statement noted that investigations into the matter have been concluded and that the suspect would soon be charged to court in accordance with the law.

The Command further revealed that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other persons, who may have collaborated in the creation and dissemination of the alleged false and inciting message.

While reiterating its commitment to maintaining peace and public order, the Police warned that the creation, publication or sharing of fake security alerts, false news and other misleading information capable of disturbing public peace constitute criminal offences punishable under the law.

Residents were advised to verify security-related information through official channels and credible sources before sharing such reports.

The Command also urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant, and to promptly report suspicious activities or genuine security concerns to the nearest police station or through designated emergency lines.

While warning members of the public against circulating unverified security alerts and misleading content online, police stated, “Together, we will continue to keep Akwa Ibom State safe and secure”.
