Police Foil Abduction of Three Year-Old Girl In Akwa Ibom, Arrest Suspect

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has foiled a child abduction attempt in Abak Local Government Area, rescuing a three-year-old girl and arresting a suspect after a swift, intelligence-driven response.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 22, 2026, at about 2:40 p.m., when the Command received a distress call from one Uwem (male, 32), who reported that a female pupil had been forcefully abducted by an unknown person and dragged into a nearby bush.

In a swift response, the Police mobilised to the scene in a coordinated operation, officers worked in synergy with vigilant youths in the community to comb the surrounding bush and adjoining areas.

The operation led to the arrest of one Saturday Ofonmbuk (male, 29), of Afaha Ikot Inyang Village, Ukanafun Local Government Area, and the successful rescue of the abducted child (names withheld).

The child was found safe and was reunited with her family, bringing relief to the community.

Further investigation is going on to unravel the motive, identify other accomplices, and links to similar incidences within or outside the State.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has issued a warning to child abductors and other criminal elements, declaring that the State is not a safe haven for crime.

It stressed that anyone found involved in child abduction or related offences will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

The Command reiterated its zero-tolerance to crimes against children and reaffirmed its constitutional mandate to protect lives and property across the State.

It also commended the courage, vigilance, and cooperation of community members, whose swift action and collaboration with the Police were instrumental to the success of the operation.

Members of the public were once again urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the Command for Prompt action.
