The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned the reported move by the Rivers State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing it as unnecessary, destabilising and politically motivated.
In a press statement signed by the Rivers State APC Publicity Secretary, Darlington Nwauju, the party said it had taken note of “the latest unfortunate developments” emanating from the Assembly chambers and made it clear that it would not support any impeachment attempt against the governor.
While acknowledging that the legislature is an independent arm of government constitutionally empowered to exercise checks and balances, the APC said the current impeachment move was unacceptable, hangover of PDP crisis and must be resisted.
“Our position as at today on this matter is that we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy,” the statement said.
The party warned that it would be wrong to allow unresolved internal crises from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to spill over and destabilise the APC-led government in Rivers State.
“It will be totally untenable for our party to keep quiet when an obvious hangover from strifes that occurred within the PDP are allowed to resurface in our great party,” Nwauju stated.
Addressing reports that the impeachment threat is linked to budgetary issues, the APC reminded Rivers people and Nigerians that during the period of emergency rule, a budget was duly transmitted to the National Assembly by the President in May 2025.
According to the party, the budget, totaling ₦1.485 trillion, was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025.
The statement noted that, the approved budget is valid for one year and is expected to run until August 2026, adding that the governor is under no obligation to present a supplementary budget if he is satisfied with the existing one.
It further explained that, the Constitution permits a state governor to spend for up to six months into a new fiscal year, countering claims that the governor had breached any budgetary provisions.
“We therefore strongly advise all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, especially APC members, to resist pressures from outside the Assembly chambers to destabilize the Government of Rivers State ably led by His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara,” the party said.
The APC stressed that it would do everything within its power to protect the stability of the APC government in Rivers State and prevent what it described as “fratricidal disagreements” from undermining governance.
Calling for an immediate halt to the impeachment process, the party warned that allowing it to continue would damage the image of the APC and hinder the ongoing progress and development of the state.
“We therefore call on members of the State Assembly, especially APC members, to immediately discontinue the impeachment process in order not to drag the image of our great party to the mud and stifle the continuous progress and development of Rivers State,” the statement read.
The APC concluded by urging political actors to uphold democratic values, declaring: “Let our state remain a democracy and not a politico-racy.”
