SECURITY OPERATIVES ARREST FIVE SUSPECTED KIDNAPPERS OF 20 NYSC MEMBERS IN IMO

Operatives of the joint security task force have recorded a major success following the arrest of five suspected members of the notorious criminal gang that masterminded the recent abduction of 20 National Youth Service Corps members in Imo State.

The suspects, according to security authorities, were apprehended during a series of coordinated and intelligence-driven operations carried out by a combined team of operatives from the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the Nigeria Police Force.

Security sources disclosed that the operations were executed between October 10 and October 14, 2026, in different locations across Rivers and Abia States, where the fleeing suspects had been hiding after the rescue of the corps members.

The development was contained in an official statement jointly issued by the security agencies, which described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation aimed at unravelling the criminal network behind the kidnapping.

It was gathered that the operations were launched immediately after the successful rescue of the abducted corps members, following credible and actionable intelligence gathered by security operatives on the movements and hideouts of members of the gang.

According to the statement, the operatives acted on precise intelligence reports that revealed the suspects had fled Imo State to neighbouring Rivers and Abia States in a bid to evade arrest after security was tightened in Imo.

The statement further revealed that during the intelligence-led raids, three other members of the gang managed to escape from the scene with varying degrees of gunshot injuries sustained during a fierce exchange of fire with security operatives.

Security agencies, however, assured that efforts have been intensified to track down the fleeing suspects, adding that the injured suspects will not escape justice as their blood trails and other intelligence are being used to locate them.

It will be recalled that the 20 corps members were abducted on October 1, 2026, while travelling along the ever-busy Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Imo State, on their way to their respective places of primary assignment.

Reports indicated that the corps members, who were travelling in a commercial bus belonging to a popular transport company, were ambushed by heavily armed gunmen who reportedly blocked the expressway and forcefully dragged them into a nearby forest.

The abduction immediately triggered widespread panic, fear, and outrage across the country, with many Nigerians taking to social media to condemn the incident and calling on the Federal Government to ensure the swift and safe rescue of the victims.

Following the incident, the leadership of the security agencies in the South-East region immediately activated a joint rescue operation, deploying heavily armed operatives from the DSS, the Military, and the Police to comb forests and suspected criminal enclaves in Imo and its environs.

After spending six harrowing days in captivity under harsh and inhumane conditions, the corps members were eventually rescued on October 7, 2026, during a daring and well-coordinated joint security operation carried out at Amakohia Ubi community in Imo State.

The rescue operation, according to security sources, was carried out after several days of intensive surveillance, technical tracking, and intelligence gathering which led operatives to the exact location where the victims were being held hostage by their abductors.

It was further disclosed that the kidnappers engaged the security operatives in a fierce gun duel before they were eventually overpowered by the superior firepower of the joint task force, which led to the successful rescue of all 20 corps members without any casualty.

Immediately after their rescue, the corps members were taken to a nearby medical facility for thorough medical examination and psychological evaluation, before being handed over to the leadership of the NYSC for further debriefing and reunion with their families.

In its reaction to the rescue, the management of the NYSC commended the security agencies for their gallantry, professionalism, and swift intervention, which ensured that the abducted corps members regained their freedom within a short period.

Meanwhile, the joint security agencies have described the latest arrest of five suspects as a decisive step towards completely dismantling the criminal syndicate responsible for the abduction and other violent crimes along the South-East corridor.

They explained that preliminary interrogations of the arrested suspects have already yielded useful information regarding the gang’s mode of operation, their sources of arms, and their alleged involvement in other kidnapping incidents along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway.

According to the statement, the suspects are currently in custody at a secure facility and are undergoing intensive interrogation by a team of investigators, while efforts are ongoing to extract more intelligence that could lead to the arrest of other fleeing accomplices.

Security agencies have also assured members of the public that all those found culpable in the heinous crime will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the extant laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to serve as a deterrent to others.

They further reiterated their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of NYSC members, travellers, and other road users across the South-East and other parts of the country, particularly during the ember months.

The agencies also appealed to members of the public to continue to provide timely, credible, and actionable information that could assist security operatives in tracking down criminals, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.

They noted that the cooperation and support received from local communities in Rivers and Abia States were instrumental to the success of the intelligence-led operations that led to the arrest of the five suspects.

Residents of Imo State, particularly parents and guardians of serving corps members, have commended the security agencies for their tireless efforts in rescuing the abducted victims and for going the extra mile to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.

Many of them, however, called on the Federal and State Governments to increase security presence and surveillance along major highways, especially the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway, which has become notorious for cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes.

The NYSC management on its part has assured corps members and their parents that it will continue to work closely with security agencies to ensure that adequate security measures and escorts are provided to protect corps members during their travels and service year.

As at the time of filing this report, security operatives have intensified manhunt for the three fleeing suspects who escaped with gunshot wounds, expressing strong confidence that they will be apprehended very soon and brought to justice.

Security analysts have described the arrest as a major breakthrough in the efforts to dismantle the criminal network operating in the region and to restore public confidence in the safety of the nation’s highways, which had been badly affected by the incident.
