In a bid to douse misrepresentation of the National Assembly over issues of States creation, The Nigerian Senate has refuted the fake news in circulation on social media platforms describing it as fabrication and misleading information to cause chaos.
A statement issued by the Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu on Monday said, the purported report was unequivocally denounced as fabricated and misleading information.
Adaramodu underscored that, the establishment of new states is a complex and stringent process, necessitating a comprehensive constitutional amendment.
Furthermore, he highlighted that any such approval must obtain the affirmative consent of no less than two-thirds of the members in the various State Houses of Assembly across the nation.
In his summary of State creation in Nigeria, Mr. Adaramodu said, “the creation of states in Nigeria has historically been a significant aspect of the country’s political evolution, aimed at promoting administrative efficiency, accommodating ethnic diversity, and fostering national unity.
“Since independence in 1960, Nigeria has undergone several phases of state creation, expanding from the original regions to the current 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
This process is constitutionally regulated and involves a rigorous procedure that includes proposals, legislative approval by the National Assembly, and ratification by a two-thirds majority of the State Houses of Assembly.
“State creation remains a sensitive and pivotal issue, reflecting the complex socio-political dynamics of Nigeria’s diverse population”.
It would be recalled that, last week a mischievous platform”Kogi Political Forum ” had posted on the social media (Facebook) that, “Senate has passed final reading on the creation of 12 new States across the six geo – political zones in the country, an unconfirmed report that stirred reactions from concerned Nigerian from all walks of life.
However, the Senate had condemned the report calling it misleading and concocted to cause disaffection amongst Nigerians.
