The Supreme Court has nullified the Ibadan convention organised by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki, dealing a major blow to the group’s claim to leadership.

In a split decision of three to two, a five-member panel of the apex court, in a lead judgment delivered by Justice Stephen Adah, strongly criticised the Turaki faction for disobeying court orders.

The ruling followed an appeal challenging an earlier decision of the Court of Appeal, which held that former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, was unlawfully excluded from the party’s chairmanship race.

The Supreme Court faulted the faction for proceeding with the convention despite a subsisting court order directing that it be suspended until nomination forms were made available to all interested aspirants for executive positions.

Describing the action as “condemnable,” the court held that the convention, conducted in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025, was carried out in clear defiance of judicial authority.
