The Victor Attah International Airport has entered a new phase in its aviation journey as it commences its first-ever international flight operations today, May 2, 2026, with a direct trip to Ghana.

The landmark flight, led by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, alongside top government officials, will depart Uyo for Kotoka International Airport, signaling the airport’s official transition into the league of international gateways following its recent upgrade and certification by the Federal Government.

The development marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the airport, which began as a visionary project of former governor, Victor Attah, and has grown into one of Nigeria’s most modern aviation facilities, now strategically positioned to drive regional and international connectivity.

Historically, the airport was formally commissioned on September 23, 2009, during the administration of former governor Godswill Akpabio.

However, commercial operations commenced in December 2009, when Arik Air operated the inaugural flight, linking Uyo with major domestic destinations such as Lagos and Abuja.

Confirming the commencement of international operations, Governor Eno described the achievement as a cornerstone in the state’s aviation and economic development.

Speaking after inspecting facilities at the airport, he expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness and the quality of ongoing upgrades.

“The airport will witness its maiden international flight to Kotoka International Airport, Ghana today, following recent upgrades upon the attainment of international status,” the governor said, adding that the progress reflects the collective efforts of contractors, government officials, and stakeholders.

He noted that the project aligns with his administration’s vision to boost tourism, enhance connectivity, and stimulate economic growth, emphasizing that all regulatory requirements including security, customs, and immigration have been fully met.

Governor Eno further commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, as well as members of the implementation committee, for their roles in actualising the milestone.

The inaugural international flight to Accra is expected to unlock new trade opportunities and strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Ghana, positioning Akwa Ibom State as an emerging hub for air travel and commerce in West Africa.
