Senator Ekong Sampson of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District has unveiled a robust account of his legislative and constituency achievements, reaffirming his commitment to people-centred governance, capacity building and sustainable development.

The Senator presented the scorecard at a symposium on ICT, strategic media engagement and sustainable development, organised for media practitioners and youths in Uyo.

He described the engagement as part of his resolve to strengthen democratic participation, transparency and inclusive leadership.

Sampson said that since assuming office in 2023, his focus has been to provide effective representation and attract meaningful development to Akwa Ibom South.

He highlighted key legislative efforts, including the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (Establishment) Bill awaiting third reading; the already passed Federal Medical Centres Act Amendment Bill; the Federal University of Medical Sciences Bill at second reading; and the South-South Development Commission Bill, which has been passed.

He noted his sustained advocacy for maritime development, environmental protection, youth empowerment, education and industrial revival, particularly the advancement of the University of Maritime Studies, Oron, and the revival of ALSCON, Ikot Abasi.

On constituency interventions, the Senator listed projects in education, health and infrastructure across the district, including ICT and CBT centres in secondary schools, construction of hostels and classrooms, rehabilitation of hospitals, road projects, rural electrification, solar streetlights and boreholes.

In the area of empowerment, Sampson disclosed that over 40 indigenes have secured federal employment through his intervention, while many others have benefited from skills acquisition programmes, business support, vehicles and tricycles.

He also announced the disbursement of a ₦100 million students’ grant for indigent students, describing education as a long-term investment in the district’s future. Additionally, he revealed an ₦100 million APC endowment fund, alongside donations to traditional institutions and party structures.

The Senator commended Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his support and praised Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for fostering cooperation between the state and the National Assembly.

In his keynote address, Professor Peter Esuh emphasised the role of the media in strengthening democracy, calling for strategic engagement, ethical reporting and continuous capacity building to bridge the gap between governance and the people.

The event concluded with a call for sustained collaboration between lawmakers and the media to promote accountability and development.

Senator Sampson was honoured with an Award of Excellence by the Association of Eket Senatorial District Media Professionals.
