The Lagos State Government has dismissed reports alleging that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was asked to resign over health concerns, describing the claim as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the government said the report—attributed to Sahara Reporters—was entirely fabricated.
Akosile affirmed that the governor remains in good health and continues to carry out his official duties without interruption.
“These reports are not only false but a deliberate attempt to mislead the public. Governor Sanwo-Olu is not under any pressure to resign, and no such demand has been made. He is in excellent health and remains committed to his responsibilities,” he stated.
The clarification followed an online publication claiming the governor was under pressure to step aside due to health issues, with Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat allegedly being positioned to take over.
However, Akosile described the claim as baseless, noting that the governor recently held a routine meeting with his deputy, during which Hamzat formally indicated his intention to contest the governorship. He said the meeting was cordial and part of standard political consultations, with no suggestion of any health-related concerns.
The statement also criticised Sahara Reporters for what it called a pattern of sensational and misleading publications, adding that although the governor’s office typically ignores such reports, it deemed it necessary to respond in order to reassure residents.
Akosile urged Lagosians to disregard the report and cautioned against the spread of unverified information capable of undermining public confidence in the state’s leadership.
