UYO – In a bold move to strengthen Akwa Ibom State’s growing aviation sector and maximize its huge investments in air transportation infrastructure, Governor Umo Eno has approved the establishment of a new Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development.
The creation of the ministry was formally conveyed through an executive circular referenced SSG/AKS/S/14/VOL.IV/29, issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prince Enobong Uwah. The directive took effect from May 4, 2026.
The development is seen as another strategic milestone under Governor Eno’s ARISE Agenda, which places strong emphasis on infrastructure expansion, economic diversification, and industrial growth.
According to the circular, the new ministry was created to ensure effective management of the state’s vast aviation assets and investments while driving sustainable development within the sector.
Part of the circular read: “In furtherance of the State Government’s commitment to infrastructural development and management of its huge investment as well as assets in the aviation sector in line with the ARISE Agenda, Governor Umo Bassey Eno has approved the establishment of the Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development with effect from 4th May, 2026.”
Industry observers and economic analysts have described the decision as timely and visionary, noting that Akwa Ibom has emerged as one of Nigeria’s leading aviation hubs through strategic investments in air transportation.
They pointed to the success of Ibom Air, the state-owned airline, the ongoing development of the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility, as well as continuous upgrades at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, as indicators of the government’s long-term aviation ambitions.
Analysts further noted that separating aviation administration from the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure would allow for more focused policy implementation, operational efficiency, and stronger investor confidence in the sector.
The newly created ministry is also expected to deepen public-private partnerships, improve regional connectivity, and enhance opportunities in air cargo and aviation-related businesses.
