Member representing Oruk Anam–Ukanafun Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. (Hon.) Unyime Idem, has pledged to construct and donate an ultra-modern registry complex to the University of Uyo as part of efforts to boost the institution’s administrative efficiency.
The federal lawmaker also assured that he would facilitate the release of the university’s take-off grant, describing it as critical to strengthening both academic and infrastructural development.
Idem made this known on Saturday, April 25, 2026, while chairing the university’s 6th Distinguished Annual Registry Lecture held at the 1,000-seat TETFund Auditorium.
He explained that the intervention follows a motion he presented on the floor of the House of Representatives, urging the Federal Government to release take-off grants to the University of Uyo and other federal universities yet to benefit from such funding.
“As a follow-up to the motion, I will engage the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to fast-track the release of the take-off grant.
This will provide the financial backbone needed for infrastructure expansion and improved service delivery,” he said.
According to him, the proposed registry complex would significantly enhance administrative processes, record management, and overall institutional efficiency.
Speaking on the theme of the lecture, “Leadership for Change: The Way Forward for University and Societal Transformation,” Idem stressed the importance of visionary leadership in driving institutional growth and national development.
He noted that universities must embrace innovation, accountability, and strategic reforms to remain relevant in addressing contemporary challenges.
Reaffirming his commitment to education, Idem listed his interventions to include sponsorship of students on local and international scholarships, construction and equipping of schools and ICT centres, and distribution of educational materials to pupils and students.
In his remarks, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Odewumi, commended Idem for his sustained support for education and public institutions, noting that his contributions reflect a strong understanding of the nexus between governance, policy, and sustainable development.
On behalf of the university, Odewumi presented Idem with an Award of Excellence in Public Service and Leadership in recognition of his contributions to societal and institutional transformation.
The event attracted academics, administrators, and key stakeholders in the education sector, who deliberated on strategies for repositioning Nigerian universities to meet global standards.
Notable attendees included; stakeholders from Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, among them the pioneer Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Amadu Atai, among others.
